The Heysham Head app is a walking audio tour which reveals the secrets, stories, histories and nature of the National Trust’s Heysham Coast site, set against stunning views over Morecambe Bay in north-west England.

There are tales of saints and pirates and objects associated with burial and memorial from Anglo Saxon and Viking settlers. And tales of more recent times too, of how we have used the site for work and play, and how we continue to shape its landscape. You will hear the voices of local people and see images from both past and present, backed by sounds from the site and music inspired by it performed by local musicians.

The stories cover the site’s history from prehistoric ages to modern times and include:

- the rock-cut graves that are unique in the UK and the historical importance of St Patrick’s chapel, St Peter’s church and the hogback stone
- local residents talking about playing on The Barrows and how Heysham was a popular tourist destination in the 1950s and ‘60s
- the natural history of the site and the importance of Morecambe Bay for migratory birds
- stories from both World Wars including how the Rectory was used an Auxiliary Hospital during WWI

The National Trust site is free to access at any time of day.

The app is best experienced using headphones or earphones.
